Galaxy S21 FE: Last year, Samsung knocked it out of the park with the release of the Galaxy S20 FE. The Fan Edition smartphone was one of Samsung’s most profitable of the year, so it’s only logical that the company will want to release a sequel this year and try and catch lightning in a bottle once more.
Predictably, the sequel will be named the Galaxy S21 FE, and, like its predecessor did last year, the upcoming model will take inspiration from the premium Galaxy S lineup while remaining a decent value and a sub-flagship price.
The Galaxy S21 FE will almost certainly be released this year by Samsung. When the phone was mistakenly listed on the official Samsung Mexico portal this week, the company at least implicitly acknowledged its existence.
In any case, Samsung would have a steep hill to climb if it wants the Galaxy S21 FE to be a worthy successor to the 2020 edition, and based on the leaks so far, the company appears to have what it takes to do so. Here’s a rundown of what we know:
Model and color choices for the Galaxy S21 FE
Similar to how the architecture of the Galaxy S20 FE was inspired by the luxury Galaxy S20 trio of flagships, the upcoming Galaxy S21 FE is expected to use a new design language similar to the Galaxy S21.
According to leaked press renders of the Galaxy S21 FE, the phone will follow the same design principles as the Galaxy S21 series, especially in terms of the camera housing. It wraps around the device’s top and side sides, making it appear less like an afterthought.
The Galaxy S21 FE will be available in at least four color choices, including gray/silver, pink, violet, and white, as mobile exclusively announced a few months ago. Only a few weeks ago, a fifth color — light green — was discovered, along with a few camera info.
Hardware and camera specifications
The Galaxy S21 FE is supposed to have a triple-camera setup on the back, but specifics are unclear. In terms of the selfie camera, it has been confirmed that it will have a resolution of 32MP, but only time will tell if this is the same 32MP sensor used in the Galaxy S20 FE or an improved shooter.
There aren’t many specifics on the hardware, but battery information leaked in mid-April. The Galaxy S21 FE, like the Galaxy S20 FE, should be powered by a 4,500mAh battery, according to this information.
Battery life can improve as a result of the use of components with higher energy efficiency. The Galaxy S21 FE’s chipset has yet to be authenticated, but the phone could be equipped with an Exynos 2100 and/or Snapdragon 888 SoC, as well as two storage options: 128GB and 256GB.
The system is expected to have a 6.4 / 6.5-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with at least 90Hz refresh rate, though 120Hz is a reasonably safe bet given that the Galaxy S20 FE already has this function. Stereo speakers and an IP rating should also be standard.
When will the Galaxy S21 FE be released?
Last month, an alleged roadmap detailing Samsung’s launch plans for 2021 was leaked, and it indicates that the Galaxy S21 FE will be unveiled at a dedicated Unpacked event on August 19.
Leaked roadmaps aren’t always a reliable source of release date information, but it’s worth noting that this specific roadmap accurately predicted the date of the Galaxy Book Unpacked case. This gives credence to the notion that Samsung will announce the Galaxy S21 FE to the world on August 19.
Pricing information is currently unavailable, but the company is expected to stick to the FE portfolio and introduce the forthcoming model within the so-called “flagship-killer” price range.
