STEEL yourself for the most emotional Oscar night ever if Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman is named Best Actor. There are sure to be floods of tears at Union Station in Los Angeles, where the golden statuettes will be handed out on Sunday night.
Because it is almost certain that the American will only be the second actor to win the prize posthumously.
His widow Simone Ledward Boseman will speak on his behalf and will marry Chadwick secretly during the final months of her life.
When she did so at the Golden Globes for her late husband, she was unable to stop weeping.
What makes Chadwick Boseman more remarkable in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’s nominated performance is that he was in the grip of the fatal disease when he delivered it with unbeatable vigour, commitment and passion.
The star died last August at the age of 43, and was so involved that at one point he pulled out a real knife instead of a fake knife.
And as long as the director was more than satisfied with his take, Chadwick’s perfectionist shouted ‘one more.’
One More for Chadwick Boseman
Most of his fellow cast members did not know he had been diagnosed with colon cancer.
It is clear that if his name is pulled out this weekend it is because Chadwick outstripped his rivals instead of being an act of sympathy.
