Jessica Walter, an award-winning actress best known for her role in the television series “Arrested Development,” died in her sleep at her home in New York on Wednesday, her daughter confirmed to CNN.
She had reached the age of 80
“With a heavy heart, I confirm my beloved mother Jessica’s passing,” her daughter Brooke Bowman said in a statement. “For more than six decades, a working actor has shared her greatest joy with others through onscreen and offscreen storytelling. While her work will live on, many people will remember her for her wit, class, and overall happiness in life.”
Walter was an on-stage and screen presence who was born in New York City.
Her roles ranged from “Grand Prix” films to Clint Eastwood’s directorial debut “Play Misty for Me,” as well as several Broadway productions, including “Photo Finish,” which won the Clarence Derwent Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut in 1963.
Walter won an Emmy in 1975 for her leading role in the Amy Prentiss NBC series, a drama about a young San Francisco police detective whose career takes off quickly. The show was a spin-off of the popular “Ironside” series at the time.
She appeared in a number of other TV shows over the years, including “Trapper John M.D.” and “Streets of San Francisco,” for which she was nominated for an Emmy.
Jessica Walter ‘s roles as Lucille Bluth in the cult classic series ‘Arrested Development’ and the voice of Malory Archer in the animated series ‘Archer,’ however, were the highlights of her career.
On Thursday, tributes to Walter were shared on social media.
