U.S. Senate Panel To Vote On Gun Control Advocate To Lead Firearms Enforcement Agency

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday will vote on whether or not to improve the nomination of the gun control proposal for David Chipman, President Joe Biden’s desire to steer the Justice department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

The ATF will play an essential role in Biden’s pledge to crack down on the tide of growing violent crime and shootings. Chipman, who has many years of experience as an ATF agent, is expected to stand opposition from Republicans on the panel who object to his views inclusive of support for a ban on attack guns.

The United States Senate is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans, making it likely that the vote for Chipman’s nomination will be tied on the panel, just as it was for Biden’s other Justice Department nominees, companion lawyer general Vanita Gupta and Assistant legal professional general for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke.

A tie would require Senate Democrats to leap through some procedural hurdles to develop his nomination, but it is not an insurmountable roadblock.

The position is so politically charged that the Senate has only had one ATF director nominee in the last 15 years. The ATF’s leaders’ relaxation served their potential by making it more difficult for them to stamp their mark on a long-lasting and meaningful policy.

The management is seeking to regulate self-assembled “ghost weapons” and stabilizing braces that can be attached to pistols. On Wednesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland pledged that the ATF will step up efforts to revoke the licenses of gun sellers who fail to conduct historical examinations or assist regulatory enforcement with requests to trace guns used in crimes; who falsify statistics or sell guns to people who are not legally allowed to own them; or who refuse to submit to the ATF’s compliance inspections.
