A U.S. appeals courtroom on Wednesday upheld the conviction and death sentence of Dylann Roof, the white supremacist who killed nine black humans at a South Carolina church in 2015, court files showed.
The 3-decide U.S. 4th Circuit court of Appeals panel issued the ruling in opposition to Roof, who argued that he was no longer competent to face trial and constitute himself and that the U.S. District courtroom in which he became determined guilty abused its discretion.
“No bloodless report or careful parsing of statutes and precedents can capture the whole horror of what Roof did,” the judges wrote in their opinion. “His crimes qualify him for the most harsh penalty that a simple society can impose.”
In December 2016, a jury located Roof responsible for 33 federal expenses for the mass capture at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston in June 2015. The same jury sentenced him to die in January 2017.
