Japan is looking into the possibility of mixing pictures of AstraZeneca p.c’s COVID-19 vaccine with the ones evolved by other drug makers in a bid to hurry up its vaccine rollout, the minister in charge of vaccinations said on Sunday.

Japan, which has formerly depended on the Pfizer Inc/BioNTech SE and Moderna Inc vaccines, accepted AstraZeneca‘s vaccine in July and has secured two million doses.

“I have requested the fitness ministry to come up with an opinion about the usage of AstraZeneca vaccines for the primary dose and Pfizer’s for the second one, or AstraZeneca’s as the first shot and Moderna as 2d,” vaccine programme leader Taro Kono stated on the Fuji television network.

This could accelerate the vaccination rollout by means of shortening the periods between the primary and second pictures and the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine, he stated.

AstraZeneca’s shots are administered for eight weeks, longer than for the alternative vaccines.

Japan is combating its worst wave of infections, driven by the Delta version, with new daily infections exceeding 25,000 this month for the first time.

The USA’s vaccination ratio has lagged behind other advanced international locations. Japan has inoculated 54% of its population with a minimum one dose and fully vaccinated 43%, in line with a Reuters vaccine tracker.
