The former Trump supporter and lifetime Republican will face off against Gavin Newsom in a possible recall election. Caitlyn Jenner, a former Olympic decathlete and reality television star, has filed papers to seek a recall election against California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Jenner, a 1976 Olympic gold medalist from the United States, rose to fame on reality television after starring in the 2007 series Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
The long-serving Republican, born Bruce Jenner, began a public transformation in 2015. She was a Trump supporter before he reversed federal rules allowing transgender students to use the restroom of their choosing.
“I’ve lived in California for nearly 50 years. I came here because I believed that everyone, regardless of their position or status in life, had the ability to make their dreams a reality, “Jenner said in a statement announcing her candidacy. “However, over the last decade, the Golden State’s glimmer has been dimmed by the one-party rule that prioritizes politics over development and special interests over citizens. Sacramento is in desperate need of an upright leader with a strong vision. “
“In the coming weeks, I will meet with Californians from across the state – from the North Bay to the Central Valley, Orange County, and San Diego – to hear their voices and finally move this state in the right direction,” she said.
“I am well aware of the gravity of this decision. The cost is substantial, but the obligation is enormous, and I can’t wait to lead, to assist, and most importantly, to disrupt the status quo once more. “
According to Axios news, Jenner has assembled a squad of top Republican operatives, including former members of Trump’s campaign and White House team. Among them is Steven Cheung, a former Trump communications director who previously served on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s successful 2003 recall effort, according to the news site.
She is supposed to portray herself as a social liberal yet a fiscal conservative, stating in her announcement that “Taxes are too big, destroying employment, harming families, and disproportionately burdening our most disadvantaged citizens.”
In June 2020, critics of Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom started collecting signatures in favour of a recall election, citing, among other things, his mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic. California’s secretary of state is currently verifying that those signatures meet the necessary number to initiate the recall election.
Newsom, who was elected in 2018, has attributed the campaign to Republicans who are opposed to coronavirus restrictions.
