Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors won his second championship of the season on Sunday, scoring a 46-point victory over the Memphis Grizzlies to average 32 points per game in the 2020-21 season.
Curry, 33, is the league’s oldest champion since Michael Jordan, 35, won it all in 1997-98. His contemporaries have taken note. LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, whose team will face the Warriors in the Western Conference Play-In Tournament on Wednesday, declared Curry the season MVP on Sunday.
“Steph had the best season of the year, in my opinion,” James said.
Steph Curry just needed five points to overtake Washington’s Bradley Beal on Sunday. The Wizards’ star scored 25 points in his team’s regular-season finale, bringing his season total to 31.3 points per game.
The Warriors’ seven-time All-Star claimed the season scoring crown in 2015-16. Curry hit his 300th 3-pointer earlier this season, the fourth time in his career. Curry is second all-time in 3-pointers, behind only Ray Allen.
Curry won the MVP award twice, in 2015 and 2016.
The entire Western Conference Tournament Play-In schedule is now available, ahead of Wednesday’s game between the Lakers and the Warriors.
Which records are still available for Curry to break?
The Warriors beat author Anthony Slater: the all-time high of three-pointers is the next great record on his bucket list. Allen is on his mind, and he will most likely sign with him in the middle of the next season. He is most concerned about the person who is still alive. Curry recently said that he will not declare himself the greatest shooter of all time until he achieves that status.
What happens after that? He will not be among the all-time leading scorers. He did not reach the NBA early enough and was injured at the start of his career.
How long would he carry on like this?
Dell Slater, Slater’s dad, was well into his forties and was still a great shooter in his mid-30s and a valuable role player at the age of 38. Steph is better than Dell and has committed to a much more advanced summer training program, saying that he will retain his All-Star standard for a few more seasons and will still be a decent player and top shooter before the age of 40.
We’ll have to wait to see what happens. But this season has done a lot to reinforce the idea that he has a bigger lead, thanks to LeBron James and Chris Paul.
Bradley Beal’s season
Wizards defeat Fred Katz: For the second year in a row, Beal will have to settle for second in the league in scoring. In 2019-20, he finished second to James Harden.
Having said that, he got exactly what he wanted on Sunday. Despite the hamstring injury, the Wizards finished eighth in the East, placing them in a double-elimination tournament.
He is also a candidate for All-NBA honors for his contributions to the Wizards’ success, whether he finishes behind or ahead of Curry.
