VAMA : The House voted Wednesday to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)
As a test of Biden’s willingness to reform the justice system, a stronger version of the Violence Against Women Act (VAMA) is being developed to protect women from armed stalkers and to raise funds for domestic violence survivors. Senator Joe Biden was a co-sponsor of a bill to reauthorize vawa in 1994, but he faces an uphill battle in the Senate. According to Vox, the main point is a clause that closes the so-called “boyfriend loophole,” which prevents anyone convicted of stalking from receiving a firearm. “We’ve hit some of the gun issues, and that’s one big deal for many of us-it’s not something we should be doing to take away people’s constitutional rights,” said Republican lead author Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA).
According to NPR on Wednesday, legislation providing support for survivors of domestic and sexual abuse that expired in 2018 has been scrutinised by a slew of new-language groups, including the NRA, aimed at preventing abusers and stalkers from possessing firearms. vama
“For those concerned about the firearms provision in this legislation, know that I have always supported law-abiding citizens’ rights in the second amendment, and that will never change,” Bice said in a statement explaining her yes. “According to the reauthorization of VAWA, vama individuals convicted of stalking or violence against a dating partner are prohibited from possessing firearms.”
“However, I can’t vote against domestic assault victims or the organisations that serve them – such as the Oklahoma City YWCA, the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestics and Assault, and countless others – for the support they require for partisan politics,” Bice said.
Despite his reservations, Cole, a member of the Chickasaw Nation, said he felt compelled to vote yes, at least in part due to sections of the law dealing with indigenous issues.
“As a strong and long-standing proponent of the Violence Against Women Act ,( vama ) I recognise the importance of strengthened and renewed tools to address domestic violence by re-authorizing the law,” he said in a statement. “Despite the fact that many misguided provisions are not included in the House’s reauthorization bill, I strongly support Native American tribes and their ability to combat violence against women vama and children in their own communities.”
In a statement explaining his vote against reauthorization, Hern suggested that the Democratic amendments to the law were too far a bridge.
“Unfortunately, the bill on which we voted yesterday included a slew of partisan poison pills that have nothing to do with protecting women from domestic violence. vama Under the leadership of [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi, this practise of politicising otherwise non-partisan issues with unrelated provisions has become the norm; it stymies the legislative process and cheapens everything we do in Congress. That is why I was unable to vote in favour of the bill before us in the House of Representatives “In a statement, Hern said.
Lucas said in a statement that he would have voted for Rep. Elise Stefanik’s (R-NY) amendment, which would have eliminated some of the new language.
“Congressman Stefanik’s amendment failed, and yesterday’s House legislation unnecessarily included partisan language that, unfortunately, undermined Congress’s ability to improve the original statute,” Lucas said. “I hope that, following any action by the Senate, the House will review this bill ( vama ) in order to adopt bipartisan and meaningful reform of this critical law for the safety and well-being of millions of women across the country.”
Mullin’s office did not respond to a request for comment about his decision. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said on Wednesday that Senate Democrats were prepared to vote and that the House had ostensibly approved the bill. ( vama )
