UK actor and musician Riz Ahmed is the first Muslim to be named Best Actor of the Academy Award for his role in the Sound of Metal movie
Riz Ahmed is certainly in a role from British to Pakistani actor. For all the right reasons, he made headlines. In addition to past nominations for the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild awards, the actor has another feather on his cap, after winning the Primetime Emmy Award and the London Film Critics’ Circle Award. Riz Ahmed makes history again with the recent Oscar nominations. For his role in Sound of Metal, he became the first Muslim actor nominated for the Best Actor trophy. Another Muslim actor, Mahershala Ali, was the first person to win the Academy awards for his Moonlight (2017) and Green Book support roles (2019).
Riz Ahmed Shows His Gratitude To His Fellow Actors
Previously, he was the first Muslim and Asian to win a leading role in The Night Of at Emmys 2017. At the 2021 Oscars, he shares the spot with Steven Yeun, who also comes from Asia.
In an interview on Monday with the Los Angeles Times, Ahmed shared how he feels like marking these first events in history. “I just feel to be honest, but people can be at this moment but they can find a connection to this moment. It’s beautiful for me. Some may be linked to the fact that he’s the first Muslim, some people might say British Pakistani, others may say first person from London’s Wembley. What matters to me is that these celebration moments, these collective recognition moments, are indeed moments when as many people as possible can recognise themselves there. And so that’s all that matters to me. I’m very happy if this is a chance for more people than ever to connect to such a moment. “
