James Charles’ Youtube channel has been temporarily demonetized, weeks after the beauty influencer admitted to exchanging sexual messages with two underage boys in a video posted on the platform.
The controversial and wildly popular makeup artist has been temporarily removed from Youtube’s Partnership Program, which allows YouTubers to earn money from their content.
According to the BBC, a Youtube spokesperson stated that the platform followed the company’s creator responsibility policy.
Against the Youtube’s policy
The policy states, “If we see that a creator’s on- and/or off-platform behaviour is causing harm to our users, community, employees, or ecosystem, we may take action to protect the community.” The company did not specify the length of time the channel would be demonetized.
Charles has over 25.5 million Youtube subscribers, making him a social media phenomenon. In 2016, the 21-year-old makeup artist from Bethlehem, New York, became CoverGirl’s first male spokesperson.
Charles has built a massively successful social media empire by posting video tutorials teaching his devoted fans how to achieve glitter, highlights, and contour perfection, among other makeup techniques, since he began vlogging in 2015.
James Charles admitted in his own Youtube video
On April 1, an unusually depressed Charles posted a video on the platform in which he addressed allegations that he was “grooming” underage boys.
“Today’s video will be from the heart, and I’ll focus on what happened, the conclusions I’ve reached, and, most importantly, holding myself accountable for my own actions,” he said.
He admitted in the video to two incidents in which he became aware that the person with whom he was exchanging messages was underage.
