Building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusivity and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation are all critical components of SA`s SDG Goal 9 (SDGs). In September 2015, UN member states adopted a new sustainable development agenda. The “Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” agenda. Achieving SDG Goal 9 means executing within the context of AU’s Agenda 2063 and NDP plans.
SDGs In National Development
As part of its National Development Plan 2030, South Africa has signed the SDGs and prioritized poverty and inequality reduction. The significance of eradicating poverty, and protecting the environment, is highlighted by measuring national progress toward the SDGs.
Access to free education for children from low-income families has been expanded; more than 9 million children now attend a fee-free school. During the year 2018, the social protection system benefited 17,5 million people, up from 3 million in 1994. More than 4.5 million people are enrolled in SA`s antiretroviral treatment program. Increased investment and measures to create more jobs are helping to accelerate inclusive growth.
Sustainable Development Report.
At the 2015 Sustainable Development Summit, 192 countries, South Africa is among them, adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The United Nations’ 193 member states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets. SA`s commitment to a comprehensive and integrated Agenda 2030 implementation as well as multi-stakeholder contributions is reflected in the Sustainable Development Report. In the latest Sustainable Development Report SA is ranked 110th out of 193 countries with a total score of 63.4%.
The Goal Tracker platform is used to track progress toward the SDGs, identify gaps, and determine where more action is needed. Goal Tracker makes SDG data interactively easily obtainable to people who want or need to use it. BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs convened a separate videoconference meeting on September 4, 2020. All BRICS leaders used the occasion to reaffirm their commitment to sustainable development goals.
SA has made significant progress on the road to sustainable development and is now well positioned to achieve the SDGs.
