With a number of political revels that have taken her from a town board in upstate New York to Capitol Hill in Washington, Kathy Hochul is soon to become the primary lady to serve as governor of New York.

As lieutenant governor, the No. 2 statewide positions, she will be able to take over in two weeks from Governor Andrew Cuomo, her fellow Democrat who resigned on Tuesday over a sexual harassment scandal.

“I believe Governor Cuomo’s decision to step down. It’s miles the right thing to do and in the great interest of New Yorkers, “Hochul (pronounced HO-kul), 62, wrote on Twitter.

“As someone who has served at all tiers of government and is next in the line of succession, I am prepared to lead as New York’s 57th Governor.”

She served 14 years as a city board member in Hamburg, a town of some fifty-five thousand people close to her native Buffalo, an extra-than-six-hour force from New York.

“She’s homegrown from the city of Hamburg, and for her to be the first female governor in the kingdom-we simply could not be prouder,” said Joan Kesner, a Democrat who served on Hochul’s town board from 1997 to 2007.

Kesner watched her buddy broker compromises between at-odds residential subdivisions and create Hamburg’s first haven residence for domestic violence survivors.

She said Hochul’s revel in working on various issues in her part of western New York, from waterfront revitalization to progressing clinical ability and local business enlargement, geared her up to serve New York, the fourth most populous U.S. state.

Steven Walters, a Republican who was Hamburg’s manager from 2006 to 2017, stated he and Hochul at times disagreed at some stage in the 2 years they labored together, but he constantly determined her to be open-minded and expert.

Walters remembered Hochul’s ardor for the environment and for improvement initiatives that kept the wilderness intact.

After her Hamburg visit, then-Governor Eliot Spitzer appointed Hochul as clerk of Erie County. In 2008, Spitzer was stopped as governor over his patronage of prostitutes.

In 2011, Hochul won a special election for a U.S. congressional district no Democrat had gained in 40 years.

Despite the fact that they were elected as lieutenant governor in 2014 on Cuomo’s ticket, the two have seldom appeared collectively. She was almost by no means present at Cuomo’s widely publicized briefings on the beginning of the coronavirus disaster.

“The lieutenant governor of New York is in a rather vulnerable position,” stated Christina Greer, a Fordham college partner professor of political technological know-how. “As far as some of the heavy-hitting troubles that are plaguing the kingdom… she has become, in large part, on the sidelines.”

But her distance from Cuomo, 63, may prove to be a blessing now as well as in November 2022 if Hochul decides to run for governor.

“A lot of humans are looking forward to a kind of management that doesn’t feel poisonous or bullying,” Greer said.

Hochul issued a declaration quickly after big apple lawyer general Letitia James released the consequences. https://www.reuters.com/international/us/new-york-ag-says-probe-discovered-gov-cuomo-sexually-harrassed-multiple-women-broke-2021-08-03 of a 5-month independent investigation that concluded Cuomo had engaged in misconduct with 11 girls that violated U.S. and state laws.

“The AG’s investigation has documented repulsive & unlawful conduct by the Governor towards a couple of girls. I trust those courageous girls & recognize their courage coming ahead,” Hochul wrote on Twitter.

Responding to Cuomo’s resignation on Tuesday, James, in a statement, expressed support for the quickly-to-be governor.

“I know our nation is in good hands with Lieutenant Governor Hochul at the helm, and I sit up for continuing to paint together with her,” James said.
