It’s a kick save and a beauty! Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei has won the 2021 MLS Save of the Year presented by Allstate award for his denial against Real Salt Lake on September 18.Following a pass across the penalty area from the left, Frei stoned Albert Rusnák’s resulting close-range effort as he scrambled into position in the 57th minute at Rio Tinto Stadium. His foot save came shortly after he returned from a knee injury and blood clot.

During his 17 league appearances, Frei recorded four shutouts and allowed less than a goal per game as Seattle made their 13th consecutive Audi MLS Cup Playoffs appearance (0.94 goals-against average). Frei, 35, was also named MLS Save of the Year presented by Allstate in 2018 for a save against the Colorado Rapids. It’s Seattle’s fourth overall nomination, following US men’s national team legend Kasey Keller’s wins in 2010-11. The 2021 MLS Save of the Year presented by Allstate award was established in 2009 and is determined by fan votes on MLSsoccer.com.
