Three Injured in Overnight Times Square Shooting; Teen Suspect in Custody
Gunfire erupted near 44th Street and 7th Avenue early Saturday morning, sending crowds fleeing and leaving three people hospitalized.

New York, August 9 EST: The gunfire came fast, sharp, and in the wrong place for anyone to shrug off. Times Square, just past one in the morning, is supposed to be noisy cab horns, street musicians, tourists shouting over the lights but not like this.
It Started As A Shouting Match
Around 1:20 a.m., at West 44th and 7th, two or more people started arguing. Loud enough for heads to turn. Nobody’s sure yet what they were fighting about, but it didn’t stay words for long.
Witnesses say there was a flash, then a crack of gunfire that bounced off the buildings. Three shots, maybe four. The crowd scattered instantly.
Times Square has cops on almost every corner, and they moved in fast. Within minutes, a 17-year-old boy was in handcuffs. A pistol lay on the ground. His name’s not being released he’s still a minor.
Three Struck, All Alive
The bullets found people who weren’t part of the argument. A 19-year-old man caught one in the foot. A 65-year-old took a round to the leg. An 18-year-old woman felt a hot slice across her neck a graze, but close enough to be something worse.
Paramedics loaded them into ambulances bound for Bellevue Hospital. By daylight, doctors said they were stable.
Tourists Ran. Phones Recorded.
Times Square never really sleeps, even at 1 a.m. Theaters had just emptied. The restaurants were still seating stragglers. Street vendors were packing up.
Then the shots.
Videos hit social media within minutes: people ducking, sprinting, dropping phones. One clip shows an EMT kneeling beside a man under the glow of the Hard Rock Café sign. Another catches a car window punched through by a bullet.
“It was just screaming, everyone running,” said a man walking with his girlfriend when the shots went off. “Didn’t even realize someone was hit until I saw the medics.”
Out Of Step With The Numbers
Police say shootings in the city are at historic lows 2025 is tracking for the smallest number on record. But Times Square isn’t just another intersection.
One burst of gunfire here cuts through the stats. It’s the spot that’s always on the postcards and TV shots, and any violence plays like a warning to the world.
More Officers On The Ground
By breakfast, the blood was scrubbed from the sidewalk and tourists were back, pointing phones at the billboards like nothing happened. Even so, the NYPD says they’re boosting patrols in the district through the weekend, uniforms and plainclothes both.
The Times Square Alliance thanked police for the quick arrest and told visitors to keep coming. Detectives are working the cameras and there are plenty to see exactly how the argument flared.
The teenager in custody is expected to face assault and gun charges. For now, all anyone knows for certain is that the whole thing took less than a minute, and it’s going to stick in people’s heads a lot longer.
