Tristan Wirfs to Miss Start of 2025 NFL Season After Knee Surgery

Bucs All-Pro tackle undergoes arthroscopy, expected to miss at least four games on PUP list

July 9 EST: The heart of the Buccaneers’ offensive line just got a scalpel through it. Tristan Wirfs, the All-Pro left tackle who has been more fortress than football player for four seasons, went under the knife Tuesday — and just like that, Tampa’s front five is in scramble mode.

The word is arthroscopic surgery. Clean-up job, they say. But let’s not sugarcoat this: when a 24-year-old tackle built like a freightliner needs mid-summer surgery for a knee he’s already been nursing since last fall, that’s not a small “procedure.” That’s a fire alarm.

And now, according to Bleacher Report and CBS Sports, Wirfs is expected to open the season on the PUP list — a bureaucratic acronym that really just means four games of hoping the left side doesn’t cave in.

A Knife, A List, And A Clock Ticking Down

It’s not just that Wirfs is great. He’s vital. The last thing a quarterback like Baker Mayfield needs — one full season into his Tampa redemption arc — is a leaky blindside. Mayfield plays with guts and swagger, but he’s no escape artist. Without Wirfs, that left edge becomes a question mark, and questions on the O-line tend to get answered with sacks.

The Bucs are trying to calm things down. “Routine scope.” “Precautionary.” “He’ll be back.” But if it were that routine, he wouldn’t be missing divisional matchups right out of the gate — Saints, Panthers, Falcons, all in the first four weeks, plus T.J. Watt and the Steelers licking their chops in Week 3.

Let’s not forget: this is a 13th overall pick who has been a wall since the moment he hit the field in 2020. He shut down edge rushers like it was personal. He moved from right to left tackle like it was nothing. He gave this offense structure, reliability, brute elegance.

Now? Tampa’s banking on Charlie Heck, a well-traveled veteran who might be good in spot duty but hasn’t been in the spotlight since college. He’ll do his best. He’ll hold the line. But this isn’t just any replacement — this is the difference between a clean pocket and a career-defining hit.

The Line Shifts. The Stakes Don’t.

This isn’t just about Xs and Os. This is about rhythm. Wirfs is the first domino in every play design. When he sets, the others follow. When he pancakes, the sideline erupts. His absence won’t show up in the fantasy stats, but it’ll be felt in the first drive, the third-and-longs, the missed deep shots that never had time to develop.

And make no mistake — the NFC South isn’t going to wait politely. Not in a division where every team smells vulnerability. Every game missed in September could come back to haunt in December.

If there’s any silver lining, it’s that reports from Yahoo Sports suggest Wirfs might be back by Week 5, just in time for a heavyweight tilt with Seattle. But “maybe” doesn’t block edge rushers. “Hopeful” doesn’t keep Mayfield upright. The Bucs need answers now, not after the season’s already tilting.

Gut Check Time in Tampa

There’s a different sound to training camp now. Less about potential, more about patchwork. The offensive line was already a group in flux, and now it’s got to hold up without its leader, its mauler, its tone-setter.

So what happens now?

Well, the Bucs can’t play scared. They’ve got to trust their depth, shift their scheme, and pray that Heck finds another gear. Because without Wirfs, this team loses more than a blocker. It loses its anchor. And in this league, games can get away from you fast when your anchor’s not holding.

The countdown to Week 1 just got a lot louder in Tampa Bay.
